John Brennan Biography
John Brennan was the son of Owen and Dorothy (Dunn) Brennan and was born in North Bergen, New Jersey. His Irish father, a metal forger, immigrated to New Jersey in 1948 from County Roscommon, Republic of Ireland. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School before continuing his education at Saint Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York, New Jersey.
Brennan attended Fordham University and earned a B.A. in political theory. In 1976, as an understudy, he voted for Communist Party USA presidential candidate Gus Hall. After Fordham, Brennan attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Master of Arts in government focusing on Middle East studies in 1980. He communicates fluently in Arabic. His exams included a less intensive year abroad learning Arabic and taking classes at the American University in Cairo.
While riding to class at Fordham, he noticed an advertisement in The New York Times stating that the CIA was recruiting. He concluded that working for the CIA would be a good fit for his “hunger for new experiences” and desire for public service. In 1980, he applied to the CIA. During his application, he admitted to a lie-detector test that he voted for the Communist Party rival four years earlier. Surprisingly, he was still acknowledged; he later stated that he thinks it was encouraging that the CIA valued free speech.

Following his appointment to the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) in 1981, he served as a political officer for the State Department at the United States’ international haven in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. After serving as the CIA’s daily knowledge briefer for US President Bill Clinton, he was nominated as the organization’s head of station in Saudi Arabia, as CIA Director George Tenet’s chief of staff, and as the CIA’s appointee official chief.
In January 2009, he was nominated as Homeland Security Advisor after briefly retiring from the CIA. Brennan was present in the Situation Room in May 2011 when the US conducted the military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. During his time at Homeland Security, he was directly responsible for introducing policies involving using drones to combat terrorism.
President Obama nominated him to lead the CIA in 2013, but his knowledge of extreme cross-examination strategies during the Bush administration was questioned. He claimed he was not in the hierarchy at the time, but the Senate later confirmed his nomination.
During his tenure, Brennan oversaw the CIA’s investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Along with various other intelligence organizations, the CIA concluded that Russia had made a concerted effort to influence the political race for Republican Donald Trump, who eventually defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Brennan left the CIA after Obama’s presidency ended in 2017. He was deeply skeptical of Trump, even calling him “treasonous” at one point. Trump denied wrongdoing and claimed that Brennan’s actions were “whimsical.” He rejected Brennan’s special status in August 2018. Nonetheless, some accepted that Trump’s actions contradicted Brennan’s analysis.
