    Saurav Ghosal Facts

  • Saurav, in 2004, became the first Indian ever to have won the British Junior Open Under-19 Squash title. He later also became the first Indian to be ranked junior world number 1 in squash.
  • He holds the record of being the first player to have won the junior national squash championship for 3 years in a row. In August 2006, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award (the 2nd-highest sporting honor in India).
  • When he secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games in the singles event, it was the first instance of India winning a medal in squash at the Asian Games. As of August 2022, India had won 13 medals in squash at the Asian Games (1 ‘Gold’, 3 ‘Silver’, and 9 ‘Bronze’) and Saurav had been involved in 7 of those (1 ‘Gold’, 1 ‘Silver’, and 5 ‘Bronze’).
  • Just like the first ‘Bronze’ medal for India in squash at the Asian Games, he also won the first ‘Gold’ (September 27 in the men’s team event) and ‘Silver’ (September 23 in the men’s singles event) medals for India in squash at the competition – both at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. In the final of the aforementioned team event, he had bounced back from a game down to pull off a remarkably close match (6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 12-14, 11-9) in a grueling 88-minute encounter to give India a vital 2-0 lead.
  • In October 2013, when he reached the quarter-final of the 2013 Manchester Men’s World Open Squash Championship, he became the first Indian to achieve this feat.
  • In December 2021, it was officially confirmed at the Professional Squash Association’s annual general meeting that Saurav had been named their men’s President. It was one of the 3 new additions to the governing body’s board of directors.
  • In August 2022, when he won the ‘Bronze’ medal in the singles event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, he became the first Indian singles (male or female) medalist in squash at the Commonwealth Games. In the ‘Bronze’ medal match, he defeated his good friend and defending champion James Willstrop of England in straight sets. James’s father, Malcolm Willstrop, was one of Saurav’s long-term coaches.
  • Before this ‘Bronze’ medal, India had won just 3 medals in squash at the Commonwealth Games – 1 ‘Gold’ medal (Dipika Pallikal/Joshna Chinappa in the women’s doubles event) at the 2014 edition in Glasgow; and 2 ‘Silver’ medals (Dipika/Saurav in the mixed doubles event & Dipika/Joshna in the women’s doubles event) at the 2018 edition in Gold Coast. Dipika and Saurav went on to take this tally to 5 medals when they won the ‘Bronze’ medal in Birmingham (2022) in the mixed doubles event.
