Rutherford B. Hayes was an American politician. A Republican, he was the 19th President of the United States, from March 4, 1877 to March 4, 1881. He was elected to the position in 1876. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, from March 4, 1865 to July 20, 1867, and a Governor of Ohio, from January 13, 1868 to January 8, 1872, and again from January 10, 1876 to March 2, 1877.

President Hayes was the son of Sophia (Birchard) and Rutherford Hayes, Jr. He was married to Lucy Ware (Webb) Hayes, with whom he had eight children. His parents were from Vermont. President Hayes had deep roots in New England, specifically Connecticut and Massachusetts.
