Jockey Ash Morgan relocates to Sunshine State
The prolific jockey who rode more winners in New South Wales than anyone else last season is making the move north to Queensland.
Ash Morgan rode 136 winners in NSW in the 2021-22 season – 15 more than James McDonald landed.
Newcastle-based Morgan is moving to live in Brisbane but will travel to Murwillumbah in far northern NSW two days a week to ride trackwork for trainer Matt Dunn.
While he will not be a stable rider for Dunn, Morgan will ride many of Dunn’s horses whether they are racing in southeast Queensland or the NSW northern rivers.
Morgan, who can comfortably ride at 54kg and even lighter for the right opportunities, will take his initial rides for Dunn in Queensland at Ipswich on Wednesday.
Dunn said he was looking forward to having Morgan on board.
Morgan, who originally hails from Wales but came to Australia to seek more riding opportunities, has ridden more than 370 career winners.
“Ash assesses horses well, he rates them well and he's got a bit of a different style to a lot of Australian jockeys,” Dunn said.
“He’s quite unique in the way he rides.
“Some horses can respond to that style of riding better than the typical way most Aussie jockeys ride.
“Ash presents well, speaks to clients well and does all the things we are looking for.”
Morgan is the latest to join the influx of interstate jockeys, primarily from Victoria, to move to Queensland for a career sea-change.
Morgan is currently appealing a three-week ban for an improper riding charge which was laid by Queensland stewards who alleged he twice elbowed a rival jockey in a race at Eagle Farm in March.
