Ellie Goulding Says She Felt Like A Sex Object At The Start Of Her Career
During a new interview with The Guardian, Ellie Goulding explained how she felt like a “sex object” near the start of her career. The star recalled her experiences with sexual harassment with a number of successful music producers.
Goulding claimed that one of the very first producers she met wanted to have sex with her when she was just 19-years-old. At the time, she didn’t understand why, because she never thought of herself as an “object of desire.”
The claims many of the musical sessions would consist of alcohol and suggestive remarks. Goulding says men were always trying to sleep with her. She had to constantly laugh away their sexual remarks and innuendo.
At that point in her career, the singer explained, she didn’t have the money to get home on occasion. Producers would tell her she could stay with them. According to Goulding, she isn’t alone in her feelings either, because many other female singers have told her similar stories of men’s suggestive remarks and sexual advances.
Her experiences as a woman in the music industry, particularly that of a desirable young woman, made her feel as if that was her power in the scene. She claimed she was “programmed” into believing that was her role and her leverage.

Initially, the singer-songwriter explained, she was hesitant to join the ranks of other women who told their stories in the advent of the #MeToo movement. She said she was too scared and didn’t want to be judged by other men and women.
Thankfully, she learned to understand herself as the years went by, including her own sexual identity as a woman. Ellie says she truly learned to feel it and she learned to embrace her true sexuality in a more mature and healthy way, separated from her professional life.
