Donald Trump Gets Another Challenger Mark Sanford Who Is Calling Out The GOP On Their Undemoc
Mark Sanford, former South Carolina Representative, has officially stated his intention to challenge current President Donald Trump in the upcoming Republican primary, leading up to the 2020 presidential election.
He added that he was going to make a more detailed announcement as soon as he was back home later the same week, but still wanted to reveal his decision as early as possible.
He shared: “I have, and I plan to announce that back home this week. But I’m here to tell you now that I’m going to get in. I am running because I think we need to have a conversation about what it means to be a Republican. I plan to focus on debts and deficits and spending.”
He added: “I think we need to have a conversation on humility and one’s approach to politics. At the end of the day, a tweet is interesting, maybe newsworthy, but it’s not leadership.”
This is not the first time the public is hearing of a possible entry into the election by Sanford, as he has given various indications in the past that he had his eyes on the important post.
Some have pointed out that his announcement comes in at a peculiar time, right when the GOP has made it clear that they are going to make it quite problematic for anyone to challenge Trump in the upcoming primaries.
Many primaries for the party have already been canceled, and the politician and many of close allies are unhappy about it.
Joe Walsh, Sanford, and Bill Weld have penned a new op-ed criticizing the party over several states canceling primaries in what they call the “undemocratic BS.”
In the Washington Post op-ed, they said: “If a party stands for nothing but reelection, it indeed stands for nothing. Our next nominee must compete in the marketplace of ideas, values, and leadership. Each of us believes we can best lead the party. So does the incumbent. Let us each take our case to the public. The saying “may the best man win” is a quintessential value that the Republican Party must honor if we are to command the respect of the American people. Cowards run from fights. Warriors stand and fight for what they believe. The United States respects warriors. Only the weak fear competition.”

Whether Trump is annoyed by that fact or not is hard to tell, as the president has not responded to the announcement by Sanford — although many are convinced that he is far from happy, as the party has been working hard to prevent possible competition for him in the last weeks/months.
